US Coronavirus Dashboard

These charts are compiled based on COVID-19 data from The COVID Tracking Project.

They'll be updated with the newest data around 6 PM PST each day.

Note that you can expand the charts to full screen using the button in the bottom right or this link and change which states are included in the trends.

(In case you haven't used Power BI before, know you can select multiple states by holding Ctrl while clicking on them.)

Notes on the data sources:
  • Where indicated, values are adjusted per capita and presented per 1 million people based on population data from Wikipedia.
    • Per capita numbers are not commonly cited in the media, but they are essential to make meaningful comparisons across states of very different sizes.
  • Total deaths compiled by The COVID Tracking Project differ somewhat substantially from other data sources (this source is lower by 10k).
    • The exact cause of this variance is unclear, but note that most media reports rely on alternative sources (such as the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Dashboard, which has higher total deaths).
  • Hospitalization data for each state started getting captured in this source at different points in time, and Florida was one of the last to be included. This means national figures for hospitalization data earlier on in the crisis are understated.
  • New York and New Jersey do not have a large outbreak currently, but they are included by default in the charts above to provide a benchmark for judging the severity of later outbreaks.
  • Confirmed positive cases are presented here because it's a number we know. However, this number is a flawed proxy for the number we actually care about (total infections). Confirmed positive case count definitely understates the total number of infections, but the degree of understatement is unknown and has likely declined over time as testing capacity increased.
